7 new and upcoming hotels of 2017
These places to stay around the world in cities and near beaches and mountains include nods to fairytales, counter culture and Japanese-inspired design.
New year, new travel plans. Whether you’re dreaming of a sandy beach, mountain view or urban getaway, we’ve got you covered with these three new and four highly anticipated hotels — from the pristine coastlines of New Zealand to the frenzied city streets of Berlin — that are sure to make your first adventure in 2017 a memorable one.
San Francisco cool
The psychedelic and counter-culture-influenced Hotel Zeppelin opened in 2016 to accolades for its progressive design. Designed by Dawson Design Associates, the hotel features 196 rooms and a street-level café, bar and lounge that serves noshes and libations from some of the city’s best artisans. The hotel’s playfulness is found in unexpected design accents, including spontaneous black light-exposed poetry, and the 1,300-square-foot games room that offers skeeball, shuffleboard, a basketball wall and an oversized electronic Bingo board synced with a dynamic sound system.
German fairytale
Inspired by Grimms’ fairytales, the recently opened Grimm’s Hotel Potsdamer Platz is the second Grimms hotel in Berlin. At the new 116-room hotel, guests can immerse themselves in intriguing folklore and spend the night in whimsical rooms evoking Snow White, Sleeping Beauty or Hansel and Gretel, among other fictional characters. Sample a selection of regional fare at the hotel’s restaurant Tischlein deck Dich (The Wishing Table) or enjoy some downtime at the Finnish sauna or rooftop terrace with unobstructed views of the city.
New Zealand wonder
Helena Bay is New Zealand’s newest boutique luxury lodge on the northeast corner of the country’s stunning North Island. This exclusive retreat is built to host no more than five couples (or a private group) in luxurious villas named after New Zealand’s native birds. Each of the villas offers a private balcony where guests can take in the South Pacific Ocean and its native wildlife, including a variety of whales and dolphins. The hotel also features a farm and several gardens that supply its “estate-to-plate” restaurant.
Japanese sensibility
Celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa is reimagining Casa Malibu as Nobu Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Located on the shores of Carbon Beach, Calif., the intimate beachfront property is owned by tech magnate Larry Ellison and will open in February 2017. Japanese-inspired design elements, including teak soaking tubs and modern interpretations of tatami mats and shoji screens, will be featured throughout the hotel’s 18 guest rooms. Reflections of nature in the architectural design are meant to blur lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a serene and calming experience for guests.
Beach beauty
Opening in early 2017, the new Shore Club Turks & Caicos is the first development on Long Bay with direct access to the pristine Long Bay Beach. It’s also a 15-minute drive from Providenciales International Airport. The $100-million resort will feature 106 ocean-view suites and six luxury villas in two lowrise buildings spread over nearly four beachfront hectares. Explore the 12,000-square-foot spa, yoga pavilion, three pools, and four dining venues, including a Peruvian-Japanese fine dining restaurant.
London calling
Arriving in early 2017, the Curtain Hotel marks the first venture into Europe for hotelier Michael Achenbaum of the Gansevoort Hotel Group. The hotel will feature 120 bedrooms, a gym, spa, co-working space, live performance room and a members club. Members will have access to special spaces, including a whisky bar, a garden room and screening room. Take in stunning city views of London from the 5,000-square-foot rooftop lounge and Moroccan-inspired pool, or feast on tacos at the restaurant and on taqueria by Red Rooster’s Marcus Samuelsson.
Irish opulence
Adare Manor in County Limerick is one of Ireland’s five-star castle properties sprawled across an enchanting 340-hectare estate. The hotel is to reveal its biggest refurbishment in 25 years in September 2017, with renovations that honour the building’s architectural heritage as a Neo-Gothic masterpiece. Guests can enjoy a world-class spa, elegant fine dining facilities, a championship golf course, trout fishing on the River Maigue, or a stroll through picturesque Adare Village, which is filled with medieval ruins, walled gardens and winding woodland paths.
